2007 Reunion Official Discussion (Location)

Postby herring on Wed Jan 10, 2007 1:47 pm

alright Dave....Dennis....anyone who is motivated about a reunion....lets kick some ideas around.

MI is ideal because it is MI...but ANYPLACE is fun and will be great. the turn out may be more or less, but that is standard. some people cant travel the way others can. In state reunions may be their only option.

so....lets start a talk.

The things to think about in regard to a reunions are location, duration and time. Where to go. How long to stay and when to go. Once you get those things squared away, then the details can be worked out provided people support the effort and pitch in to make it work.

For 2007 or at least sometime in the future, I’d pick Mare Island because, as previously stated, it is a place most of us share. However, a reunion can be held and work nearly anyplace.

I’d suggest opting for a time when the weather was good there (spring, summer and fall). Id see when folks could go (or not go as well).

If there will only be a Mare Island/San Francisco based event, then I’d shoot for 2 to 3 days with the main events on Saturday.

Vallejo City info: http://www.ci.vallejo.ca.us/GovSite/default.asp
Vallejo Area Hotels: http://www.findlocalhotels.com/listings ... ca_us.html

If some up front planning was done. We might get into some buildings at Mare Island, or get some local tours going, maybe a boat to Susuin or something or do something else folks might enjoy. It would just need to be worked out.

If we get a few choices listed, then maybe we could set up a poll (vote). Lets folks choose.

I think a reunion at Mare Island would be good. I'd be willing to go this year, just need enough lead time to make sure it will fit in the schedule. I'd like to see what's changing, and to be able to show the family what it was like before it changes too much.

I noticed that a lot of folks have kids in school and or work in school systems themselves. You may wish in your planning to consider a date that will be conducive to all. I would like to revisit the Bay Area myself.

School would have to be out and MI is the only place it should be. We should formalize it with the current tennants so we can get the access we need to have a good time.

Actually.... if there are DS's and beer it'll be a good time!!!

Just thought of something... If any of the gear is still being taught here at Great Lakes perhaps we can arrange an access visit. A central location is the second choice to minimize travel costs and time for everyone. Chicago, Wrigley, Pizza, the Lakefront.... something to think about.

Good idea for an MI reunion in 07 or 08 or 09 . . . I think we should leave the location open but work MI for any time in the future.

There are multiple tenants and owners. We might think about starting with a list of places we know are still there and we want to see. My memory of MI is not good enough for this so we'd need others to pitch in and help make the list.

We then could work the list with whomever is using the building now.

A list of old bars and stuff we might want to slither in might be fun also.

I agree with Doc, that regardless of location we need to consider folks with kids whom might not be able to make it in certain time frames. We try to keep the USS England reunion placed just after school lets out for this reason.

For 07’ the suggestions for location have been:

  • Pensacola
  • Chicago
  • Mare Island

Please, add your ideas!

I propose we continue that list for a week or so and then have a poll that we leave open for a couple weeks or longer to pick.

Thoughts?

Some thoughts:
1. What level of formality do we want. organized tours, dinners, speakers, ...or just wing it.
2. What resources do we have to put it together? Having a brave soul who lives near the identified cities and is wiling to make the arrangements may determine where we are going.

My opinion is that we should try to keep it informal. Formal events are a lot of work and the costs go up fast. The location and available facilities will determine a lot about what can be done easily. Most bars will serve most of us! But I am open to whatever folks want.

We can gauge the number going and make hotel information available if it is needed and start making more grandiose arrangements based on expected turn out. For all thee location posted thus far, there is at least one local (or close to that) person we can hit up and with the internet and such, folks can arrange things from considerable distance!

Please understand that I am not proposing a reunion just at Pensacola. I would LOVE to have one at Mare Island. I was stationed there for 8 1/2 years, and have friends and family still there. We collectively, have our roots there. And Chicago as well, boot camp, BE & E (twice) RD "A" school, and my son and all my grandkids live there. And as Rob will attest, Chicago is one grand city, with more than enough to keep us busy. What I am doing , and will do, is offer to run one and use my place as home port, There are a lot of folks in close proximity to Pensacola, and a lot to do. This isn't set up to be a competition, but what YOU ALL want. Dave

Rusty,
You forgot to place beautiful Marlborough in the reunion poll? After all Marlborough is the home of the John Brown Bell, the birth place of Marcia Cross, and we are only a long-stones throw from Longfellow's Wayside Inn.
