Mare Island in summer sounds great. March is too close to April 15th, which is a brutal day for DINK's

These numbers are a bit low, honestly. I looked at a 2 bed 1 bath in Palo Alto, 1000 sq ft, for 900k.

to MI, and Beyond! (was: to infinity....)

Postby Todd94590 on Fri Jan 12, 2007 5:04 am

hey y'all,
thanks for the email-- and I voted MI if only because I live 2 miles from there :)

as I've read through some of the other posts on this discussion: housing prices are beyond silly. I bought for $125k in '96 (market slump when it was announced that MI would close), and it is now worth $550k (or so said the loan officer when we applied for a 2nd)

the homes being built on MI (where all the former enlisted on-base housing used to be) are selling for around $700k; and there can't be but 5 feet between them, no yard to speak of whatsoever. Yet they still build them, so somebody must be paying that much.

I know there are others around the area, but don't have much/any contact. Gaining access to all of the former CSTSC buildings can be done, but not sure who to contact for that-- should the reunion happen here, I will personally see to it that these ducks are in order. Some may be aware that Touro University bought most of CSTSC property: Owens Center gym and the crypto building next to it are the classrooms and labs; the chow hall is now their library. The former BOQ (engineering school for officers) is a dorm, officers chow hall is open. All of the old type/style roads are at present being upgraded to *real* streets (whavever that means)-- gutters, new pavement, etc.

On Dec. 31st, I think it was Jim Engels came up and he & I went around the island. Forgive me if I got the name wrong (again), besides being very busy with a kitchen remodel, surgery (othewise known as procedures, but it's still surgery-- 4 done, maybe another 4 to go ?) It was a lot of fun for me; he had his son, which added to the joy, and let me drive his sis-in-law's car around so he could looky-loo at everything.

oh, one other point, saw a post about motorcycles-- bring it up! FWIW, I was the motorcycle safety instructor for the last 3 years of CSTSC's life. Also recall that for quite a long time, the causeway bridge was off limits to bikers, but that rule was revisited some time before I tranferred back in in '93.

I will make sure to contact Gumbah's and Napoli Pizza too.... gotta feed the troops :)

Well, happy new year to y'all, sorry I haven't been around much in the last year. will try and do something about that this year. wow, I can type out a bunch sometimes, too.

As far as do-ability goes, Mare Island does hold a certain appeal due to the ties to that community for me and the wife. Her parents were married at the Chapel there and both Mindy and her older brother were born at MI when the school was still a hospital! I was living in Dublin (30 miles south) when I enlisted in 1970. We married in 1982 (second for each) and are still at it. I know I'd also voted for Pensacola, mainly because there are folks there that I'd love to see who might not be able to make it to NoCal and most of my Dad's family lives in South Florida.

Aw, hell, wherever this gig comes off, I hope to see ALL OF YOU in attendance. Muster will be taken. All those not present will be volunteered for "less-than-desirable" duties...

nah, wasn't me. but I'll call when I'm in the area, Todd. I'm probably in for Vallejo if it doesn't conflict too much with school. but if it's on a weekend like I think it will be, then I can certainly work something out.

Reunion Locations

Postby etcsusn on Fri Jan 12, 2007 4:19 pm

Unfortunately none of the locations suggested would work for me. It's just too expensive to take the family someplace other than where I already have family, especially anywhere on the left coast. Since I am still in Norfolk, I would submit a write-in vote for here. However, I know that I am only one voice among many. So, if you decide to have the reunion at any of the sites to be voted on, have a cold one or three for me and I will just have to be satisfied with reading your stories afterward.

Hello,

I have a suggestion for a reunion. Sorry it can't be implemented this year - idea needs a long lead time and some one to jump in and coordinate.

My vets group is "WAVE National". We have local units that take on our reunion responsibilities. The unit in Gulfport, MS worked with a
Travel Agency there, and the Agent was the contact between those who signed up to go and the Carnival Cruise Line. We were supposed to go out of New Orleans - then Katrina happened.

But the agent worked out the port change to Galveston, and cost & cabin type stuff with Carnival. It all worked! Had cabins for two - or more, (lots for mates to do), good chow, ship's entertainment, shore excursions, and the Cruise Line provided space for daytime meetings, and we could arrange social gatherings for our group - lots of restaurants and pubs to choose from on a ship.

We were allowed to pay in installments (through the travel agency again) to cover the cruise cost in that two year period. The WAVE National has bi-annual reunions - so there was a long lead time.

The travel agent, if they are any good, can manage, arrange, and book a reunion cruise, flight to the port of departure - even rides from airport to the cruise terminal. Cruises go from many ports to many places these days and for different lengths 4-5 days, 6-7 days, etc.

I will put this info on the forum.

As much as I'd like to get together and meet all of you, it looks doubtful this year will be the year...although I see that Chicago was suggested - that's at least possible....
